iOS 6-1-3

Apple has released iOS 6.1.3 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and it is now available for download. The update brings many improvements and bug fixes to iOS. In iOS 6.1.3 Apple has finally fixed the lock screen bug that allows unauthorized limited access to iPhone even when passcode was applied. The iOS 6.1.3 update also brings Maps app improvement for Japanese users which were earlier released to developers in the beta version of iOS.

Although it is not mentioned in the release notes Apple has reportedly killed the Evasi0n untethered jailbreak of iOS 6 for all supported devices so the current Evasi0n tool cannot be used to jailbreak any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

The iOS 6.1.3 is available through over-the-air update for all iOS 6 supported devices.

Here are the official release notes for this update:

This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including:

– Fixes a bug that could allow someone to bypass the passcode and access the Phone app
– Improvements to Maps in Japan

If you jailbreak your iOS devices and would like to continue using the jailbreak the stay away from iOS 6.1.3 until further notice. As MuscleNerd points out in the following tweet users won’t be able to downgrade to iOS 6.1.2 jailbreak even with saved SHSH Blobs.

wireless charging patent iPAd

No matter what Apple’s competitors are thinking about Apple’s international market share, its antagonism with Android, the instability of stock prices, etc, Apple is always focused on innovation and setting trends in the market in terms of technology. A recently known patent application has been shown up signaling that the company has arrangements to make its most wanted tablet computer even more attractive.

The newly discovered patent application reveals that the iPad Smart cover might be used for more than just protection. Apparently it will be having the same foldable design which makes it best adjusted in the current Smart Cover. The new thing is, as described by the patent is the Smart Cover will be wirelessly charge the device using inductive charging mechanism. The patent has also briefly described the working; it says that it will charge the iPad in display position or in closed position.

This report is not giving authentic and credible information about Smart Cover at moment, but considering the everyday increasing fame of wireless charging, this release must not be a surprise for us and might become an important selling point of iPad 5 that is expected in next few months. We are expecting that Apple will be using same Qi inductive power standard in its wireless charging functionality like many others. [9to5Mac]

Latest reports originating from iMore say that Apple is planning to release the next generation iPhone 5S this August. Last year, iPhone 5 just like the iPhone 4S was released in the mid of September, so the August release of iPhone 5S this year will be a few weeks earlier than the last year’s release. The report suggests that the iPhone 5S will feature the same design as of iPhone 5 with a better camera and improved specifications.

Further iMore claims to have information according to which Apple will release the next generation iPad, which also dubbed as the iPad 5 in April of this year despite releasing the iPad 4 in the beginning of November 2012. This release date will fall in line with te Spring release cycle Apple has followed for first three generations of iPad.

Along with the iPad 5 the report suspects that a new model of iPad mini will also be released in Spring. iMore further said that it is not clear as yet whether the April iPad mini update will have a retina display or not, however the previous reports said that a device with Retina display is expected this October. If Apple continues to stick with plans of releasing bi annually, we might see both non-Retina and Retina iPad mini same year.

iPad 5 is expected to feature a completely new design which will be different from iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPad 4 – all of which have the same design. iPad 5 is expected to look more like iPad mini in terms of looks and thinness.

One of the biggest complains of iPad users is that many popular jailbreak tweaks do not feature support for their tablet. Well it looks like at least one jailbreak developer is listening as Lockdown Pro tweak now supports iPad. If you are not familiar with Lockdown Pro tweak, it is a tweak for jailbroken iOS devices that allows users to password protect apps and folders of their choice.

The iPad version of the Lockdown Pro tweak is similar to the iPhone version and works in the same way. Users can configure the tweak from Settings and put a password on apps they don’t want others to get access to. Users can even put a password on a folder, which is very convenient as you can put all of your apps that need to be protected in one place without selecting them separately from the settings menu.

The Lockdown Pro has been a paid tweak ever since its release but now the developer has released the lite version of his tweak. The Lockdown Lite feature less options and has advertisements. It is still nice to see developers releasing free versions of their tweaks as it will not only allow users to test a tweak before purchasing but will also be helpful for those who can’t afford or do not want to spend on tweaks for their iPhone and iPad. The Lockdown Pro lite version has all the essential features that are found in the paid version.

The lite versions for both iPhone/iPod touch and iPad are available for free. The paid versions of Lockdown Pro tweak for iPad and iPod touch can be purchased from Cydia for $2.99. Both versions are available separately under the BigBoss repo.

iPad 5 cases

Apple unveiled the fourth generation iPad just a few months ago and now rumors about the iPad 5 have already started to pour in. The new image has emerged from accessory maker MiniSuit, which has allegedly revealed the design of upcoming iPad 5. The company says that it has developed the case based on details received from a ‘reliable source’.

Observing the cover, it seems like the design of the new iPad 5 will be similar to that of the iPad mini. It was being expected that Apple will bring iPad mini’s widely loved thin design to the larger version and make them look alike in coming generations.

It is common for case makers to have inside information related to the upcoming Apple products however the information coming out from them isn’t always reliable. From a general observation, MiniSuit seems to be first to get hold of this information – although it is said widely that iPad will have an iPad mini like design, no other case maker has published photos for the upcoming products.

It is also expected that Apple would make the upcoming iPad even slimmer and significantly thinner with chamfered edges as seen in the case photos above.

While news related to the iPad 5 are coming in from different sources we are still unclear whether Apple will announce the next generation of iPad in next few months. Usually Apple has followed the release cycle in which it releases the iPad in first half of the year with the exception of iPad 4, which was released in October 2012 along with the iPad mini. Also it is worth mentioning here that Apple recently released the 128GB model of the iPad.

Ever since its release iPad has enjoyed a greater share of tablet marketshare and now with the release of iPad mini the Apple’s tablet is still standing strong. Not only iPad is maintaining its share in the tablet market but is also cannibalizing PC sales at the same time.

According to a recent report by Canalys, one out of every six computers shipped in the fourth quarter of 2012 was an iPad. The demand for tablets grew 12 percent to 134 million units in the fourth quarter of last year while in the year 2012 PC sales saw a 5 percent decline.

While iPad sales are still strong Canalys reported that the total percentage of Apple’s iPad shipment when compared with the whole tablet market was 49 percent. This is the first time the figure has gone below 50 percent. In the same 4th quarter, the Google’s Android powered tablets enjoyed 46 percent market sales. Android, which had struggled in competing against the iPad has gained thanks to the release of some competitive tablets from Samsung, Amazon and others. Perhaps the most powerful of all Android tablets is Google’s own Nexus 10 that features a high resolution display, powerful specs and low price point.

On the other hand Windows 8 wasn’t able to do what Microsoft had hoped for and had a small percentage of tablet shipments in the fourth quarter of 2012.

After jailbreaking their iOS device many iOS users especially with iPads complained that the stock Weather app has stopped working or is causing problems. Shortly after the reports @evad3r team members acknowledged the problem and announced that a fix for Weather app is on the way. Evad3rs has announced that not only they will add the fix to the evasi0n tool but also allow those who have already jailbroken their iOS devices to download the fix through Cydia.

But if you don’t want to wait and want to fix the problem right away then hacker @pod2g has shared a solution for fixing the Weather.app bug. The fix is intended for power users only and if you don’t have good knowledge of how iOS scripts work then wait for the official Cydia package, which is being pushed right now.

The problem is with com.apple.mobile.installation.plist fileThe following script forces rebuild of com.apple.mobile.installation.plist :

#!/bin/bash

chmod -x /usr/libexec/mobile_installation_proxy

killall -9 mobile_installation_proxy
